So I finally got around to starting on this. This is the first part of a full cosplay that I plan on making and wearing to the next convention I go to, most likely Oni-con.
The material is poplar, and it was cut out mostly on a large band saw (I had to re-saw the board as it was too thick as it was) and the details were cut using a scroll saw.

Is the blade and the handle whole? or is it a 3-part sandwich like hilt-blade-hilt glued together?

Just being careful, at this stage it was pretty rough, but I cut just on the outside of my lines to give myself a little wiggle room.
